Spalding’s police station was forced to close yesterday after a resident came in with a live World War Two mortar shell.
The building on Westlode Street was closed to the public yesterday, July 5, from noon until the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team (EOD) arrived to carry out tests on the wartime bombing device at 2pm.
Lincolnshire Police are currently encouraging residents to hand in firearms as part of a week-long amnesty initiative.
During this time, anyone declaring the weapons will be not be subject to criminal charges.
A spokesman for the force confirmed: “A member of the public brought in a World War Two mortar shell that had been in their attic for years and we closed public access until the EOD arrived.
“They took it away, where we understand a controlled detonation in a marsh was carried out.”
