Milwaukee: 5 men charged after blast from apparent pipe bomb injured two police officers on July 4


Five Milwaukee men have been charged with felony offenses related to improvised explosive devices after two police officers were injured by a powerful blast during July 4 celebrations on Water Street.

Three of the men told police they were driving around the area shortly after midnight July 5, throwing fireworks and what appeared to be pipe bombs from a car to scare people, according to a criminal complaint filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court.

One of the three men said they were trying to scare two officers monitoring vehicle and foot traffic when they threw one of the devices near them along the 1200 block of North Water Street, the complaint said.
