Viktor Gruev, professor in Engineering, is overseeing a project aimed at detecting underwater mines, with funding from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The technology now has the potential to support mine clearing in the Strait of Hormuz.
Gruev’s project initially began with the development of a polarization camera, used for cancer imaging, before shifting to target detection underwater. “Having the polarization properties enabled us to see targets three to five times the distance than a regular camera can,” Gruev said. “And once we’re able to sense them, able to see a target, you get closer to them, you do a little bit more examination, whether it’s a mine, whether it’s another object.”
