A three foot long torpedo was found yesterday afternoon after a local man in Slapton came across it while using a metal detector.
A bomb disposal unit from the Royal Navy team were deployed at around 3pm yesterday afternoon (February 12) to rig and destroy the ordnance, which created a “big and loud” explosion.
Dartmouth Coastguard rescue team attended the scene and say they saw the “fins of a projectile” in the sand.
“Battling against an Easterly Gale 8 in atrocious weather and large waves covering everything in spray and an incoming tide the EOD rigged and destroyed the ordnance in situ.
