The triple-lock system governing the deployment of troops abroad will not be an obstacle to Irish participation in a military training mission to Ukraine, Defense Minister Simon Coveney has said.
Ireland has indicated that it is ready to contribute to an EU training mission for the Ukrainian military which is currently in the planning stages. The mission will strengthen existing bilateral training initiatives and take place outside Ukraine.
Mr Coveney said the exact parameters of Ireland’s involvement still needed to be worked out, but the Defense Forces’ bomb disposal and demining specialists could play a role.
