The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in Iraq welcomes an additional funding from the Government of Italy, which will contribute to support the Government of Iraq (GoI) to protect civilians from the threat of explosive ordnance (EO) and will enable humanitarian, socio-economic, and reconstruction efforts.
The Government of Italy has actively participated in the UNMAS Iraq programme, since 2016. Iraq is one of the most EO contaminated countries in the world. According to data from the Iraqi national mine action authorities, a total of over 2.7 square kilometers are still contaminated with landmines, cluster munitions, improvised explosive devices, and other types of explosive remnants of war. EO poses a concern to public safety and restricts access to livelihood opportunities and infrastructure.
