Royal Navy makes Pitcairn Island safe during explosive visit


A team of Royal Navy divers safely detonated more than 3½ tonnes of explosives during a visit by HMS Tamar to the remote Pitcairn Islands. Pitcairn is a tiny British Overseas Territory in the southwest Pacific with only 38 residents and it is one the most isolated populated places in the world.

In 2024 HMS Tamar conducted her last visit and discovered 3.5 tonnes of high explosive ammonium nitrate stored in the north of the Island, which required a specialist team and equipment to remove. Therefore, earlier this year, Tamar embarked the eight-strong Bravo Diving Unit II from the Royal Navy’s Diving & Threat Exploitation Group (DTXG), to safely dispose of the explosives in a series of controlled detonations.
