Philippines: Army troops recover 4 IEDs in Basilan town


Military troops on Thursday recovered four improvised explosive devices (IED) believed to have been assembled by the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in Basilan.

In a statement, Lieutenant General Corleto Vinluan Jr., chief of the West Mindanao Command, said the IEDs were found by troops conducting a special operation in Barangay Campug, Al-Barka, Basilan on Thursday morning.

According to Brigadier General Domingo Gobway, commander of the Joint Task Force Basilan, the recovered items include two IEDs filled with ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) placed in two 1-kg can containers; one IED filled with ANFO placed in a 900-gram container; one IED filled with ANFO placed in a 500-gram container; one 9-volt battery; one pressure-type switch; one improvised blasting cap; 20 projectiles; three-foot detonating cords; one 40mm high explosive cartridge; and one 40mm practice grenade round.
