On Thursday 7 November 2019, a vehicle containing a visible IED was discovered in front of a residence in Apaseo el Alto, Guanajuato. The device was a ‘Papa Bomba’ (Potato Bomb) based on a FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia) design.
A Mexican Army (SEDENA) bomb squad subsequently rendered the explosive device safe. The placement of the IED in the vehicle has been attributed to violent competition between the Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) and Cártel de Santa Rosa de Lima (CSRL) in the town and surrounding region.
