The army bomb disposal unit conducted a controlled explosion on a grenade in a residential area in Portumna, Co Galway this afternoon.
Nearby residential properties on Abbey Street were evacuated as members of the Irish Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit carried out the procedure.
No injuries or damage were caused. Gardaí confirmed that the incident involved a deadly device that was “historical in nature”.
