Homes evacuated after bomb disposal team called to Luton street


Police have evacuated a number of homes in a Luton street after reports of a suspicious vehicle.

Officers, including a bomb disposal unit, are still at the scene in Napier Road following a call from a member of the public at 8.30am this morning (July 11).

A video posted by Livesoundz Producxtions, reads: “Bomb threat in Napier Rd Luton all tenants kicked out…we are arranging emergency accommodation for tenants on the street..please get in touch if you can spare a room or studio for Napier rd tenants…thanks in advance….”

A spokeswoman for the force said the homes had been evacuated ‘as a precaution’ but that the incident is not being treated as terror related at this stage.

“The explosive ordnance disposal team (EOD) are in attendance and one controlled explosion has been carried out to gain access to the vehicle”, she added. “A cordon is in place and further work is being carried out to make sure the vehicle is safe.

“The evacuation is a precautionary measure as the safety of the local community is a priority. There is not believed to be any wider threat to the public.

“The incident is not being treated as terror related at this stage.”

The cordon has since been lifted, with a Bedfordshire Police spokeswoman saying: “A cordon was put in place around the immediate area, which has now been lifted.
