British Columbia: Nanaimo man charged after loaded handgun, pipe bomb seized


A 51-year-old Nanaimo man is facing multiple firearms-related charges after police say he was arrested with a loaded handgun and later found to have a pipe bomb and multiple firearms at home.

James Newstead was arrested without incident the night of May 2 after a witness reported that a man pointed a gun at him and fled the scene near the intersection of 5th Street and Princess Avenue, according to Nanaimo RCMP. Police say Newstead was located shortly after the report and was found carrying a loaded .45-calibre handgun. The pipe bomb was safely disposed of by the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit, according to police.
