Bomb squads have been scrambled 5,000 times in five years to disarm potentially deadly wartime explosives.
That figure could soar as building projects unearth more bombs across UK cities.
The 5,041 alerts between 2014 and 2018 were revealed in the week of the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
The last bombs of the Second World War were dropped on Britain in 1944.
At least 24,000 tons of high explosives rained down on London alone in 85 German raids.
