At approximately 5:20 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, 2024, the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) Communication Center received several 911 calls reporting an explosion near the intersection of South 116th Street and 1st Avenue South in Burien (map below).
Callers described hearing a loud explosion, seeing the blast, or nearly being struck by an object that exploded while driving in traffic. Burien Police/KCSO deputies responded to the scene and discovered remnants of what appeared to be an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that had been thrown onto the road.
