An engineer who set off an improvised explosive device in an effort to disrupt an international weapons expo has described it as a “terrible error in judgment”. Shamera Fernando detonated a “homemade incendiary device” in the bathroom of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on September 12 last year.
The explosion caused a small fire in the middle stall which self-extinguished but caused $4600 to the cubicle. At the time the centre was hosting the three-day Land Forces International Land Defence Exposition, with the incident unfolding shortly after 1pm on the second day of the expo.
