Sri Lanka: Army de-miners in full swing to complete de-mining process in North


During the last phase of the Humanitarian Operation, mines remained scattered haphazardly all over the North posing serious threat to human habitation. In 2002, the Sri Lankan Government initiated the National Mine Action Programme aiming to create a mine and explosive devices-free environment.

Aimed at establishing a mechanism for effective clearance of mines in Sri Lanka, the first course on Humanitarian De-mining was begun in 2003 at the Embilipitiya Engineers’ School.
