Four Burundian soldiers were killed and another wounded after explosions targeted their military convoy in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region, Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab claimed via its Andalus radio station.
Burundian peacekeepers have not immediately commented on the claims by the militants, which come shortly after another bomb attack killed a traditional leader and injured five others, including two Hirshabelle regional MPs in the town of Jowhar, about 90 km north of Mogadishu.
The attack took place on the road linking Jowhar to Mahadaay. There are contradicting reports about the blasts, with some indicating that there was a suicide car bomb targeting the African Union military convoy heading to Jowhar.
