Thai police chief gives shrine bombing reward to officers even though investigation still unsolved

The Thai police investigation into the Bangkok shrine bombing may have been heavily criticised, but the force’s chiefs believe that their investigators have done so well that they are giving them the £55,000 reward for the only arrest so far.

The national police chief declared that officers would receive the money for the detention of a suspect – even though the man has not even been charged, his identity is not known and he is not believed to have planted the bomb.

Gen Somyot Poompanmoung, who has become increasingly annoyed at media questions about the state of the investigation, said that he was giving the award to his investigators to highlight that Thailand’s police are good at their job.
