A dozen explosions and fires in Russian territory bordering Ukraine since April 1 could signal the war is moving in a new direction – across borders and into neighboring countries.
Some of the incidents are deliberate while others could be accidental. It’s not known whether they’re a coordinated effort, though some targeted links in Russia’s military supply chain.
Fuel storage units, an ammunition depot and other sites less than 100 miles from the Ukrainian border have been hit. Other targets, deeper in Russia, caught fire 24 hours apart:
- A research institute for missile systems.
- A chemical plant that produces missile propellents.
- An engineering college connected to the Russian space program.
