Mali, Niger, Burkina form Sahel alliance to tackle insurgency


The military leaders in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have signed an charter establishing defence alliance, ministerial delegations form the three Sahel countries.

“Today, together with the Heads of State of Burkina Faso and Niger, I signed the Liptako-Gourma Charter establishing the Alliance of Sahel (AES), the aid of which is to establish an architecture of collective defence and mutual assistance for the benefit of our populations,” Assimi Goita, head of Mali’s ruling junta, posted on X/Twitter. It was learnt the Liptako-Gourma region – where the Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger boarders meet – has been ravaged by jihadism in recent years.
