The 6th Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal Flight assigned to MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, led a joint disposal operation along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF, at the Avon Park Air Force Range Sept. 8-11.
In 2016, the ATF began investigating a prior convicted felon for the possession and distribution of commercial explosives without a federal license or permit, which is prohibited by law.
“As ATF, we’re tasked to do explosive investigations, criminal enforcement and assist in the disposal of any explosive hazards,” said Christopher Nicolussi, one of 48 ATF certified explosives specialists across the country. “We also respond to state and local authorities and assist them with any type of explosive-related hazard or criminal investigation as it pertains to federal law.”
After an undercover investigation, ATF agents confirmed the suspect was maintaining explosive fuses and flash powder in a storage unit in Sarasota, Florida, while selling them online. This led to the execution of multiple search warrants of the individual’s storage unit as well as his residence, which resulted in the seizure of approximately 7,700 pounds of explosives — the largest explosives seizure in
