Inside the gruelling danger experienced by Irish peacekeeping troops in Syria


On the roads along the Golan Heights danger lurks at every corner for Irish troops.

A 50-year-old land dispute between Syria and Israel, a Syrian civil war, and a battle for the hearts and minds of the Golan Arabs between one of the world’s most notorious terror groups, Islamic State, plus meddling Iran and Russia.

Throw into the mix landmines, sporadic attacks, and missile launches – it is not a place for the faint-hearted.

Stuck in the middle are over 1,000 peacekeeping troops – United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) – drawn from around the world including 130 hero Irish troops.
