In the age of improvised explosives Raiders wrestle with light strike vehicles


Marine Raiders are struggling to find the right tactical vehicle fleet at a time when improvised explosive devices continue to pose a major threat on many battlefields.

As the Marine Corps moves back to its expeditionary roots, the Corps in recent years has expanded its fleet of lightweight vehicles capable of rapid deployment, that includes the Internally Transportable Vehicle, or Growler, the Polaris MRZR, and recent testing by the Raiders to field the new Ground Mobility Vehicle 1.1.

But those soft-skinned trucks have limited armor protections and pose a hazard when operated in regions threatened by improvised explosive devices.
