A farmer was killed Wednesday when an explosive remnant of war (ERW) detonated on his land in Battambang province, taking the number of blast casualties to 21 since the start of the year. This marks a rise of 17% compared to the same period last year.
Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) Director-General Heng Ratana said the farmer died after an anti-tank landmine left over from decades of war exploded on his farm in Toek Sap village, Phlov Meas commune, Ratanak Mondul district. The explosion destroyed the tractor the victim was operating. Ratana said the land had been cultivated for years but had not yet been cleared due to a lack of information about contamination in the area.
