Baltic nations seek more NATO defence as drone hits Latvian oil tanks


The Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) have told Latvian Television that two drones have crashed in Latvia’s eastern Latgale region overnight.

The precise crash sites have yet to be specified, but early on the morning of Thursday, May 7th, airspace threat alerts were issued covering the Balvi, Ludza and Rēzekne districts.

At the request of the armed forces, a mobile phone warning message was issued to residents at 4:09 a.m. in Ludza and Balvi districts, and at 4:43 a.m. in Rēzekne district. The alerts were eventually declared to have lapsed at around 8:25 a.m. with the NBS saying “The National Armed Forces inform that the possible threat to Latvian airspace has ended.”
