Bomb disposal unit defuse ‘improvised explosive device’ in Limerick

Gardai and the Army bomb disposal unit were called out to deal with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in west Limerick earlier today.

Members of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team from Collins Barracks were called to the scene at Rathkeale, located 30 km southwest of Limerick city, at around 9am to inspect and deal with the device, which was found at the rear of an unoccupied house.

Up to 20 houses and premises in the town were reportedly evacuated and the Main St in Rathkeale has been closed to facilitate the operation between Castlematrix and the fire station following the discovery.

The bomb squad arrived on the scene at 12:17pm and removed the device to a secure location for examination shortly after 2pm where the device was made safe.
