The sound of long-range missiles and mortar strikes filled the morning air Tuesday as 10th Mountain Division soldiers trained for battle. The most deployed division of the U.S. Army tested some of the newest technology the Army has.
On display, soldiers used one of the Army’s newest pieces of technology, a remotely driven pickup truck, a mine-clearing system called SLICE. “Last 2 years we’ve been working on autonomous breaching. It’s a very dangerous job and we want to let robotics go do that at that major point of friction with whatever enemy we may see in the future,” said Sgt. Maj. Corey Wilkens of the 20th Engineer Brigade. Wilkens says the F-250 pickup truck can travel a road remotely, and when explosives are found, fire off its own weapons to clear the way.
