Japan: Suspected WWII US bomb defused in Ōita Prefecture


A Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) team was deployed to a work site here on Feb. 21 to defuse and remove a suspected U.S. bomb from World War II.

The Usa city government cordoned off an area within a radius of roughly 400 meters from where the bomb had been unearthed at a sewage system work site, affecting 265 residents in 114 households.

The likely 250-kilogram aerial bomb was found 2.4 meters underground on Jan. 27. While its tail fuse was missing, the fuse in its nose remained intact, requiring the GSDF to defuse it on-site.
