At least eight police officers, including a commander, and three civilians were killed when a suicide bomber tried to enter a wedding hall in central Kabul on Thursday, Afghan officials said.
Police officers spotted the bomber at the gate of the compound, said a police spokesman, Basir Mujahed. The commander, Lt. Sayed Basam Pacha, threw his arms around the man, who then detonated his explosive vest, Mr. Mujahed said.
“He’s a hero, he saved many lives,” Mr. Mujahed said of Lieutenant Pacha. “All seven of those policemen are heroes but especially him. Just think if that suicide attacker got past the gate, what would have happened — you cannot even imagine.” The compound and building were crowded with civilians.
